The United Nations Women (UN Women), the Government of Japan showcased the success of the Women’s Socio-Economic Resilience Project, a pivotal initiative designed to deliver vital relief and protection services to women and girls in flood-affected regions. The project, funded generously with $1.85 million from the Government of Japan, played a crucial role in enhancing the resilience and adaptability of women and girls facing emergencies and disasters.
The aid, directed specifically at women-focused humanitarian services, targeted nine districts in Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan. Speaking at the event, Muhammad Asghar Memon, Secretary Planning and Development Department of the Government of Sindh, emphasized the significance of Japan’s support, stating that it arrived at a critical time for women and girls in the flood-affected areas.
Memon expressed gratitude, noting that Japan’s contribution enabled women to assume leadership roles within their communities, fostering a sense of empowerment. Hattori Masaru, Consul General Japan in Karachi, reiterated Japan’s commitment to women’s human rights and combating gender-based violence.
He highlighted the enduring partnership between Japan and UN Women, praising their joint efforts in promoting safety, protection, and resilience among flood-affected women and girls. Masaru acknowledged UN Women’s tireless dedication to strengthening women’s leadership and inclusive development in Pakistan. Sharmeela Rassool, UN Women Representative in Pakistan, expressed deep gratitude for Japan’s generous financial support. She emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, especially in vulnerable districts affected by floods.
The funds provided by the Japanese Government have been instrumental in delivering essential humanitarian services, including psychosocial support, awareness campaigns on gender-based violence, assistance for survivors, support for civic documentation applications, and entrepreneurship development. Additionally, relief goods such as mother kits, baby kits, and inclusion kits have been provided to support women in the affected regions. The collaboration underscores a commitment to the well-being and empowerment of women and girls, demonstrating the strength of international cooperation in the face of adversity.
