The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), in collaboration with the Pakistan Africa Institute for Development and Research (PAIDAR), organised a special event in Islamabad to commemorate Morocco’s Enthronement Day and to highlight the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and Morocco.
Morocco’s Throne Day is observed annually on July 30 and marks the accession of King Mohammed VI to the Moroccan throne in 1999. The occasion is regarded as Morocco’s foremost national celebration and provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s achievements as well as its national and international priorities.
The ISSI gathering brought together diplomats, policymakers, academics, researchers, media representatives and members of foreign policy community to discuss Morocco’s development journey and the depth of Pakistan-Morocco relations. The event also provided a platform to underscore the shared historical, cultural, trade and diplomatic bonds between the two countries.
Speaking on the occasion, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, President PAIDAR, highlighted the historical foundations of Pakistan-Morocco relations, recalling Pakistan’s support for Morocco during its struggle against colonial rule. He noted that the friendship between the two countries has continued to evolve on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests.
Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Foreign Secretary (Africa), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered the keynote address, while Ambassador Syed Adil Gilani, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Morocco, and Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman Board of Governors ISSI, were also associated with the proceedings.
The Moroccan diplomatic perspective was represented by Ambassador Mohammed Karmoune, Ambassador of Morocco to Pakistan and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps.
The speakers emphasised the growing potential for cooperation between Pakistan and Morocco in areas including trade, investment, education, tourism, agriculture, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
Morocco’s strategic geographical position as a gateway to African and international markets was also highlighted as an important avenue for strengthening economic ties. The event reaffirmed that Pakistan and Morocco enjoy cordial and longstanding bilateral relations, with both countries sharing common interests in promoting peace, stability, development and stronger cooperation within the Muslim world and beyond.
