ISRAEL’S latest deadliest military strikes on Lebanon, are a stark reminder that, time and again, it has positioned itself as a spoiler of peace.
At least 254 people have been killed and hundreds more wounded, as warplanes levelled buildings across Beirut, targeting over 100 Hezbollah military sites. Scenes of crumpled cars, flaming wreckage and terrified citizens scrambling to save their families are now etched in the collective memory of Lebanon. Hospitals, overwhelmed and pleading for blood donations, underscore the human toll of this aggression.
This attack comes at an especially perilous time. Iran and the United States had just agreed to a ceasefire in the region and were preparing for talks in Islamabad aimed at reducing hostilities. Yet Israel, by choosing to strike Lebanon in what its defense minister described as a “surprise attack,” has dangerously escalated tensions. The very timing of these strikes undermines the fragile momentum toward peace, highlighting a pattern in which Israel’s actions consistently obstruct stability in the Middle East. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that the establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon is a key condition of Tehran’s 10-point plan for resolving the conflict. Iran’s acceptance of the broader ceasefire was a serious gesture toward diplomacy, yet Israel’s attacks threaten to undo these efforts and derail the path toward dialogue and negotiation. The United Nations has rightly condemned the strikes, calling the scale of killing and destruction “horrific” and urging prompt investigations. Indeed, Israel’s actions not only inflict immense human suffering but also directly sabotage the international community’s pursuit of sustainable peace. At this critical juncture, the United States must exercise its influence over the Israeli leadership. Instead of emboldening attacks on Lebanon, Washington should leverage its position to halt these hostilities and ensure that peace initiatives are fully implemented. Peace will remain elusive unless ceasefire is observed comprehensively and the region must remain vigilant against the spoilers. The consequences of renewed conflict will be far more serious. Dialogue, diplomacy and the full implementation of ceasefire are the only paths toward lasting peace. Anything less risks a return to chaos, with no party, regional or global standing to gain.
