RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD – Torrential rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad has triggered a rain and flood alert, disrupting traffic on various roads across the twin cities.
Heavy rain was recorded in several areas. New Katarian received 120 millimetres of rain, Golra 119mm and Shamsabad 104mm.
Earlier rainfall measurements at the three locations had stood at 101mm, 90mm and 75mm respectively. Rawalpindi recorded more than 126mm of rain overall.
Authorities issued a rain alert for the catchment areas of Nullah Lai, warning that further rainfall could cause the water level to rise rapidly and increase the risk of a flash flood. All relevant departments have been placed on alert.
As of 8am on September 1, the water level in Nullah Lai had reached 28.5 feet at Katarian and 23 feet at Gawalmandi. Residents have been urged to evacuate immediately and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
Affected Areas
Floodwater entered shops in Raja Bazaar, Jamia Masjid Road and Imambara Chowk, while several low-lying areas, including Arya Mohalla, Millat Colony, Javed Colony and Dhok Khabba, were inundated.
Affected Roads
Water also accumulated on Expressway, Chaudhry Road, Service Road Saddarabad, Dhok Kala Khan and Mochi Bazaar.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in various cities across Punjab over the next 24 hours as part of the eighth monsoon spell.
