TEHRAN – Iran on Saturday detained several intelligence and military officials in connection with the investigation into the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
The media reports suggested that the military sources revealed that intelligence and military personnel as well as the employees of Haniyeh’s guesthouse were taken into custody as part of the investigation into his killing.
The US media reported that Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran raised major questions about Iran’s security, which is why a special intelligence team from the Revolutionary Guard is conducting the investigation.
Ismail Haniyeh was killed on July 31 while attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran.
Haniyeh’s assassination is being considered a major loss for the Palestinian freedom movement, and Iran has declared it a duty to avenge his killing.
Meanwhile, Israel has yet to claim responsibility for Haniyeh’s death.
Earlier the international media reported that Haniyeh was killed in a missile attack and that Israel obtained information about his presence through spyware via WhatsApp.
It was later revealed that a bomb had been planted in Haniyeh’s room beforehand, and that Israel had installed the bomb with the help of Iranian agents, with Iran allegedly possessing photographs of the agents.
