TEHRAN – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that its naval and aerospace forces jointly targeted 85 locations, including US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait, using missiles and drones.
In a statement, the IRGC said the operation targeted the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
The Iranian military said the strikes were carried out in response to what it described as a US violation of a ceasefire and the Islamabad Agreement.
According to the statement, the operation followed alleged US airstrikes earlier the same day on coastal and civilian areas in Iran’s Hormozgan Province and Mahshahr, prompting what Tehran called a retaliatory response.
The IRGC described the attack as an initial response and said Iran reserved the right to respond forcefully to any action threatening its sovereignty and national security.
The statement also accused the United States of attempting to undermine the significance of the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, through airstrikes, adding that the Iranian people and armed forces would not yield to external pressure.
There was no immediate official response from the United States, Bahrain, or Kuwait. The reported strikes, as well as the extent of any damage or casualties, could not be independently verified.
Analysts say that if Iran’s claims are confirmed, the incident could further escalate tensions in the Gulf region and mark a significant new phase in the ongoing crisis between Iran and the United States.
