THE United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, has delivered a damning indictment of international community’s role in facilitating Israel’s brutal actions in Gaza.
In her report, Albanese pulls no punches, exposing the complicity of 63 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and India, in what she describes as Israel’s “genocide” against the Palestinian people. This is not a new chapter in the ongoing tragedy of Palestinian suffering, but rather, a continuation of a decades-long pattern of global indifference and active participation in the oppression of whole population.
Albanese’s report unequivocally states that Israel’s actions, far from being carried out in isolation, have been made possible by the unwavering support of these third states that have enabled Israel to pursue a genocidal agenda with impunity. By providing military, diplomatic and economic support, these nations, particularly those in the West, not only shielded Israel from accountability but also legitimized and normalized its violations of international law. Had the influential countries taken concrete steps to hold Israel accountable, the trajectory of the conflict could have been dramatically different. Instead, these countries not only failed to stop Israel’s aggression but actively facilitated it through trade agreements, military assistance and diplomatic cover. The international community is fully aware of the tools at its disposal to prevent these violations of international law. Economic sanctions, arms embargoes and the suspension of trade agreements are all measures that have been successfully employed in the past. Yet, in the case of Israel, none of these measures have been implemented, despite clear and consistent rulings from international courts calling for accountability. Regrettably, Israel has renewed its attacks on Gaza. As of now, it seems clear that the cycle of oppression will continue unless concrete steps are taken to hold Israel accountable. The time has come for the countries with diplomatic and trade ties with Israel, especially those in the West, to seriously reconsider their relationships. If Israel does not halt its ceasefire violations and commit to ending its violent campaign in Gaza, the international community must act. Cutting trade and diplomatic ties is not just an option, it is a moral and legal imperative. The lives of countless innocent Palestinians are at stake and it is the responsibility of the world to stand with them, not with the perpetrators of violence.
