ISLAMABAD – After 1.5 months of digital silence, residents of Mirpur and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir are finally reconnecting with the outside world as internet services begin returning just days before July 27 elections.
A major development emerged ahead of July 27 elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), as mobile phone and internet services have started returning after a 45-day blackout. Acting on directives from the federal government, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated the phased restoration of connectivity, with services gradually resuming across parts of Mirpur Division.
Internet services remained suspended since June 5 due to prevailing law and order situation, leaving residents of Mirpur city and surrounding areas without mobile internet for more than six weeks. The restoration process has now begun just days before the elections, bringing relief to thousands of users who had been cut off from digital communication.
SCOM’s internet service has been fully restored in Kotli, while connectivity has also resumed in Dadyal, Mirpur. However, services provided by Zong, Ufone, and several other mobile operators have yet to be fully restored, with users in some areas still experiencing limited or partial connectivity.
Authorities say the restoration is being carried out in phases, with efforts underway to ensure communication networks are fully operational before voters head to the polls on July 27.
