KARACHI – The police officials faced inquiry after producing a high-profile suspected drug peddler, Anmol alias “Pinky”, before the court without handcuffs and under special protocol, in alleged violation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The police officials said that the suspect was arrested from Karachi’s Garden area a day earlier and is wanted in multiple cases, reportedly absconding in around 10 different criminal matters.
Authorities claimed that drugs and weapons worth approximately Rs1.5 million were recovered from her possession. Police further alleged that she was running a well-organised narcotics network across the city, including online supply through riders, and had also involved female riders in her distribution system.
After hearing initial arguments, the court sent the accused to jail on judicial remand.
The incident sparked controversy after a video surfaced showing the suspect, wearing sunglasses, moving inside court premises without handcuffs while being escorted by police personnel. The footage triggered strong criticism on social media, with questions raised over preferential treatment.
Taking notice of the matter, Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Azad Khan ordered an inquiry into the alleged SOP violations and directed officials to determine responsibility of the officers involved. A police spokesperson said strict action would be taken against anyone found violating rules, adding that adherence to SOPs is mandatory for all personnel.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho also sought a detailed report and ordered the immediate suspension of the investigation officer and staff found negligent. He further directed the formation of a high-level committee to ensure a transparent inquiry.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar also took notice of the incident, demanding a report and announcing that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) would be formed. He said any misuse of authority would not be tolerated, adding that those responsible would face strict legal action.
Later, authorities handed over the investigation to SSP South and suspended SHO Garden Police Station Hanif Sial, Investigation Officer Saeed Ahmed, and SIU Inspector Zafar Iqbal.
Meanwhile, details of the FIR stated that Garden police conducted a raid at a flat in Garden West following intelligence reports that narcotics were being prepared and distributed from the premises.
Police claimed to have recovered 1,540 grammes of cocaine along with nearly 6,970 grammes of chemicals and raw materials allegedly used in drug manufacturing. Items including ephedrine, ketamine, cocaine hydrochloride, and baking powder were also seized.
A 9mm pistol, two magazines and 10 rounds were also recovered during the raid, while cash, mobile phones and other valuables were taken into custody, according to the FIR. Separate cases have been registered under narcotics and arms laws.
The case has also raised concerns among residents of the building after a family claimed the address mentioned in the FIR belonged to their rented apartment. The family said they had lived there for eight years and had no connection with the suspect, adding that police action and media reports had caused them serious distress and forced them to face eviction pressure from the landlord.
