Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, has said that Indonesians are optimistic about the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI).

“The people of Indonesia are among the most optimistic in terms of AI utilization,” he noted, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics on Monday.

The deputy minister made the statement during the Ministers’ Closed Consultations on the Interim Report of the UNSG’s High-Level Advisory Body on AI in Slovenia on Sunday (February 4, 2024).

He said that Indonesian start-ups, whose number has continued to grow to reach 198, have shown the country’s readiness to utilize AI.

According to him, the fact that many start-up companies are utilizing AI technology to provide services in Indonesia indicates the big potential for AI use and development in the country.

Patria informed that his ministry has a number of mainstay programs to develop start-ups.

They include the “1,000 Digital Start-ups” and “Start-up Studio Indonesia” programs.

In addition, the government has also readied the HUB.ID program to connect start-ups with investors. He said that several start-up companies have been created through those programs, including Feedloop AI, Evermos, and eFishery.

At the meeting, he also discussed the use of AI as well as the Internet of Things (IoT) for providing solutions for public services.

On December 19, 2023, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics issued the Communication and Informatics Minister’s Circular Number 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics as part of the initial stage of developing an AI governance model.

The principles of ethics in the circular accommodate several elements: inclusivity, humanity, security, accessibility, transparency, credibility and accountability, personal data protection, sustainable development and environment, and intellectual property.—Antara
