KARACHI – A sigh of relief for tax payers as Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended the deadline for the filing of income tax returns until October 14.

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced an extension for filing income tax returns at requests from various trade associations and the Tax Bar Associations.

The tax collection authority issued a notification late night, which stated, “In line with Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the FBR is pleased to inform that the deadline for filing income tax returns for the Tax Year 2024, which was originally due on September 30, 2024, has been extended to October 14, 2024, in response to appeals from trade organizations, Tax Bar Associations, and the public.”

The announcement was made hours after FBR had declared that no further extensions would be granted, urging taxpayers to file their returns promptly to avoid penalties.

The extension follows widespread speculation about the filing deadline due to technical issues within the FBR system, which many taxpayers faced while attempting to file their returns. Despite these challenges, over 3.5 million individuals already submitted their returns, with most filings from salaried individuals processed without significant delays.

Officials hopes that this new deadline will provide taxpayers with the necessary time to complete their filings, ensuring compliance and minimizing the risk of penalties.
