KARACHI – The federal government has appointed Imran Sarwar as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) for a three-year term, effective immediately.
The bank informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) about the appointment through a regulatory filing.
According to the notification issued by the Finance Division on September 3, 2026, Sarwar’s appointment is subject to clearance under the State Bank of Pakistan’s Fit and Proper Test requirements.
Sarwar brings more than 27 years of experience in the banking sector, with expertise spanning corporate banking, institutional banking, investment banking and risk management. His professional career includes experience in Pakistan, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
He holds degrees in Business and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University and an LLB from the University of the Punjab.
Sarwar takes charge at NBP following a recent change in the bank’s top leadership. Rehmat Ali Hasnie had served as NBP President and CEO since May 12, 2022, until the completion of his tenure on August 21, 2026.
Following the end of Hasnie’s tenure, Abdul Wahid Sethi was appointed Acting President and CEO of the bank pending the appointment of a permanent chief.
The appointment of Sarwar comes as NBP continues to maintain a strong financial position. During the first half of calendar year 2026, the bank reported a profit before tax of Rs67.3 billion and a profit after tax of Rs32.4 billion.
The bank’s earnings per share stood at Rs15.23 for the six-month period ended June 30, 2026.
As one of Pakistan’s largest commercial banks, NBP plays a significant role in the country’s banking and financial system. Sarwar’s appointment is expected to bring extensive domestic and international banking experience to the institution as it moves forward under new leadership.
