International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has praised Pakistan’s progress in implementing its economic reform programme, saying the measures have helped maintain stability, rebuild confidence and restore access to international markets.
Georgieva made the remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The two discussed Pakistan’s reform agenda and the upcoming review of its IMF programme.
In a post on X, Georgieva said Pakistan’s strong implementation of reforms had supported economic stability and market confidence. She added that sustained reforms could contribute to higher growth and better living standards.
PM Shehbaz thanked the IMF for its continued support and reiterated his government’s commitment to carrying forward the Fund-backed reform programme. He also acknowledged Georgieva’s role in strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the IMF.
The PM said Pakistan was gradually transitioning from macroeconomic stabilisation towards economic recovery despite regional conflicts and external inflationary pressures. He said the government remained committed to the reform agenda, highlighting improvements in fiscal discipline, stronger external buffers and rising investor confidence.
Shehbaz also pointed to measures including the National Tariff Regime, enhanced domestic revenue mobilisation and progress on the privatisation programme. He stressed that economic reforms would continue alongside measures aimed at protecting vulnerable segments of society.
Georgieva welcomed Pakistan’s performance under the IMF programme and the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy, noting that the measures were delivering tangible results.
The meeting also covered Pakistan’s upcoming IMF programme review and further cooperation to advance reforms, strengthen economic resilience and promote sustainable economic growth.
