ICC T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa reach semi-finals by beating West Indies

ANTIGUA –  In a thrilling match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage, South Africa defeated the West Indies to qualify for the semi-finals.

South Africa reached the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals for the first time in 10 years.

The host West Indies set a target of 136 runs for South Africa to win.

The match was interrupted by rain, reducing South Africa’s target from 136 to 123 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method, to be achieved in 17 overs.

South Africa defeated the West Indies by 3 wickets.

The match had become a knockout match, as the winning team would qualify for the semi-finals, while the losing team would be eliminated from the World Cup. Consequently, the West Indies are now out of the tournament.

South Africa’s Batting:

While chasing the target, South Africa started their innings, but rain interrupted play after 2 overs, resulting in a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs. Tristan Stubbs scored 29 runs, Heinrich Klaasen 22, captain Aiden Markram 18, and Quinton de Kock 12 runs. Marco Jansen remained unbeaten with 21 runs.

For the West Indies, Roston Chase took 3 wickets, Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph took 2 wickets each.

Earlier, in the match played at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 stage, South Africa won the toss and decided to field against the host West Indies.

West Indies’ Innings:

Invited to bat first, the West Indies had a disappointing start, losing 2 players at a total score of 5, with Shai Hope scoring 0 and captain Nicholas Pooran scoring 1 run.

Roston Chase, coming in at number three, formed an 81-run partnership with Kyle Mayers, bringing the total score to 86. Opener Kyle Mayers, who was at the crease with 35 runs, was then caught out.

No other West Indies batter could stay at the crease for long, and one by one, players returned to the pavilion. Andre Russell scored 15, and Akeal Hosein scored 6 runs.

Alzarri Joseph remained not out with 11, and Gudakesh Motie with 4 runs, leading the host team to a total of 134 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

For South Africa, leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi bowled excellently, taking 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada each took one wicket.

West Indies: Rovman Powell,  Kyle Mayers, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Obed McCoy.

South Africa:  Aiden Markram,  Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi.
