Efforts led by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab have launched a project to construct a new Hub Canal and rehabilitate the existing one, aimed at improving water supply to District West and District Keamari.
The project, progressing rapidly, is expected to be completed within the next year.
The initiative includes upgrading the Hub Pumping Station, Rising Main, and Hub Filter Plant, increasing capacity from 80 MGD (million gallons per day) to 100 MGD. The project, costing Rs. 12.76 billion, has a fixed budget. During a meeting with a delegation led by Provincial Deputy Ameer of JUI, Qari Muhammad Usman, KW&SC COO Engineer Asadullah Khan highlighted that this project will significantly address Karachi’s water needs, particularly benefiting residents of District West and Keamari. The JUI delegation raised concerns about water supply and sewerage issues in areas such as SITE, Maripur, Baldia, Mominabad, Orangi, and Manghopir Town. They urged the KW&SC to prioritize solutions. In response, Engineer Khan assured immediate action and directed on-site officers to resolve the grievances.
He stated that while Karachi requires 1,200 million gallons of water daily, only 650 million gallons are currently available. The KW&SC is working tirelessly to ensure fair distribution and improve the city’s water supply and sewerage systems. The JUI delegation also called for legal action against individuals who recently disrupted water distribution by tampering with valves and obstructing tankers.
They emphasized the importance of effective strategies to prevent such incidents in the future, labeling water wastage as an “illegal and immoral act.”
Engineer Khan reiterated the KW&SC’s commitment to providing water at subsidized rates under the General Public Service (GPS) program, ensuring supply to mosques, madrasas, hospitals, schools, and public tanks without any obstruction. The meeting was attended by various religious and community leaders, along with KW&SC officials, including Syed Akbar Shah Hashmi, Qazi Aminul Haq Azad, and Zafar Palijo. The discussions concluded with a shared commitment to improving Karachi’s water infrastructure and fair resource distribution.
