KARACHI – Pakistan’s oil companies have warned of a possible petrol supply shortage, stating that the country currently has fuel reserves sufficient for around 15 days amid concerns over supply challenges.
The Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) informed the government that the petrol supply situation has become unusually serious and called for immediate intervention to avoid possible disruptions in the availability of motor spirit (MS).
Only 15 Days Petrol Reserves
In an urgent letter sent to Energy Minister (Petroleum Division) Ali Pervaiz Malik on July 15, the advisory body said the country currently has around 370,000 metric tonnes of petrol reserves, which are enough to meet approximately 15 days of demand.
Oil companies highlighted several factors that could affect fuel supplies, including delays in customs clearance of imported petrol shipments, rising demand and financial pressures facing the industry.
According to the industry, delays in the WeBOC system are affecting the clearance process for imported petrol. Companies warned that if three imported petrol cargoes fail to arrive on time, fuel availability could face further pressure.
The advisory council also pointed out that outstanding payments of around Rs66.7 billion have contributed to financial difficulties for oil companies, making it harder to manage supply operations.
The warning comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, including developments linked to US-Iran relations, which have raised concerns about possible impacts on energy markets and supply routes.
Oil companies have urged the government to take urgent measures to ensure smooth fuel availability and prevent disruptions in petrol supplies across the country.
