Operating a data centre is complex and in addition to that, it is expensive too. The highly competitive data centre market further makes the task at hand super difficult. However, as brands try to build a profitable business, it is essential to work towards enhancing the data centres while ensuring productivity and lowering operational costs. Without maintaining efficiency, cutting down the data centre cost is extremely difficult. However, the big question is how exactly to cut down the data centre cost? Here are a few ways to reduce data centre costs for your brand.

Go for the right-size equipment

The efficiency of the data centre improves as you move towards its full utilization. The servers and cooling systems can only be termed efficient. If you do not have the option to go for a cloud provider, ensure that you are going for the right-size equipment for full utilization.

Outdoor air cooling

A significant cost of managing the data centres goes into bearing the cost of cooling systems to maintain the temperatures of the data centre. You can depend on an outdoor air cooling system when the outside temperature is low. It is similar to using an ethernet cable instead of the wireless internet for online activities. Even though the methods are different, it serves the same purpose of doing so more efficiently. You can check the internet speed on Speed Test or PLTC to see the visible difference in the internet.

You can use the cooler outer air to maintain the data centre’s temperature through optimization of the duct routes. The initial investment might look huge, but it will prove to be cost-efficient in the long run.

Monitoring of the maintenance strategy

With the Internet of Things, it is now possible to closely monitor the maintenance strategy of the data centres. Through close monitoring of the data centres, you can ensure maintenance decisions that are not only smart but also cost-efficient. Repairing a system after it fails can cause a huge financial burden; however, repairing the same before it fails, on the other hand, can be cost-efficient. It further prevents downtime of the data servers too.

Run the server only when required

Running the server even without a requirement results in the wastage of resources. You can switch it off when not needed. It is a myth that repeatedly switching the data server on and off can reduce the durability by causing strain. On the other hand, the reality is that there is no proven study to indicate it. Therefore, we recommend you switch off the data server when it is unused.

Information life-cycle management

Information life-cycle management involves moving the data to a less-expensive system. In addition to that, it also includes eliminating the data when it fails to offer its value. You can use different services and software to implement information lifecycle management.

Remove duplicate data

Removing duplicate data can highly reduce the storage space. If you are keeping both the old and the new copies, it is time to remove the old copies and only store the new copies. Carry out a backup and ensure that you only possess unique data in the data servers.

Use direct current to power the data centres

AC-DC conversion can result in extreme power conversion. The data centres run on direct current. You can save the additional power consumption by connecting the data servers directly to the DC supply. Even though the initial infrastructure required for it is high, you can save plenty of costs in the long run. Further benefits include the release of less heat and improved efficiency.

Server virtualization

Most physical servers have a low utilization rate, resulting in wastage of resources. With server virtualization, you can consolidate the servers in a manner that only one physical host server manages the different workloads. A virtual server can be used for executing it which acts like a real server. Additional benefits of server virtualization include reduced electricity consumption and low downtime. It also improves scalability.

Depending upon the scope of your brand, you can implement one or more of the above-discussed ways to reduce the data centre costs. We recommend you calculate the ROI before implementing any of these strategies.
