LAHORE – Punjab capital Lahore is gearing up for what could be one of city’s longest and most festive weekends in years.
Authorities are considering declaring Friday, February 4, an extra public holiday, which, along with Kashmir Day on February 5 and the weekend, would give residents an uninterrupted four-day break.
Officials say extended holiday aims to make celebrations safer, more enjoyable, and to reduce traffic congestion and curb unnecessary motorcycle rides across metropolis. Basant events are officially scheduled from February 6 to 8, giving residents plenty of time to soak in the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
Meanwhile, strict safety measures are in place to ensure fun but controlled celebration. Kite flying is only allowed from February 6 to 8, while kite sales will run from February 1 to 8 through registered vendors tracked by QR codes. Dangerous items like Charkhi (spools) and hazardous strings—including metallic, nylon, or chemically coated types, are strictly restricted.
Children under 18 are barred from flying kites, with parents facing fines of up to Rs100,000 for violations. Motorcyclists must use protective wires to prevent accidents, and anyone caught using unsafe kite strings could face up to five years in prison and fines of Rs2 million.
After decades of restrictions, Lahore is finally set to enjoy a vibrant, tightly controlled, and unforgettable Basant celebration.
