BEIRUT — Lebanese group Hezbollah on Saturday confirmed death of chief Hassan Nasrallah during a major Israeli airstrike on Beirut.

The military conducted a targeted operation that struck over 140 Hezbollah positions, targeting infrastructure located beneath residential buildings in the area. The assault has resulted in extensive damage, leveling several buildings in the densely populated southern suburbs of the capital.

Arab media said IDF used “bunker-busting” bombs, in further escalation. The ongoing bombardment has led to thousands of residents fleeing their homes, seeking refuge in the streets of Beirut. As the situation unfolds, Hezbollah’s confirmation of Nasrallah’s death marks a critical turning point in the ongoing conflict. Further developments are expected as the international community closely monitors the situation in Lebanon.

In July this year, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, with the group blaming Israel for the attack that also killed one of his bodyguards.

Iran’s Khamenei vowed “harsh punishment” for Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu did not confirm involvement but emphasized recent actions against Iranian proxies and warned of consequences for aggression.
