ISLAMABAD – Heavy rain caused flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Monday, with the water level in Nullah Lai rising sharply and reaching alert levels at Kattarian and Gawalmandi.
According to the latest update recorded at 7:20am on August 17, the water level at Kattarian stood at 19 feet, while the level at Gawalmandi reached 17.5 feet.
Authorities have placed both Kattarian and Gawalmandi under an alert. Evacuation at both locations will be initiated if the water level reaches 20 feet.

Water also entered homes in Dhok Khabba and Sadiqabad following the heavy rainfall. The district administration advised residents living around Nullah Lai to remain cautious.
Recorded Rainfall
Rainfall data showed that Golra received the highest amount of rain at 145 millimetres, followed by Bokra with 134mm and Pirwadhai with 107mm.
Gawalmandi recorded 80mm, New Kattarian 76mm, Katcheri 62mm, Shamsabad 48mm and PMD 48mm. Saidpur received 10mm of rain.

Earlier rainfall figures also showed substantial precipitation across the twin cities, including 144mm in Golra, 132mm in Bokra, 105mm in Pirwadhai, 77mm in Gawalmandi, 41mm in Shamsabad and 60mm in Katcheri.
Nullah Lai Situation
The heavy rain pushed the water flow at Gawalmandi Bridge to 17.5 feet, while the Kattarian level reached 19 feet, bringing both locations into the alert category.

The evacuation threshold at both Kattarian and Gawalmandi has been set at 20 feet.
Rain Forecast till August 21
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert from August 17 to August 21 for upper and central parts of the country.
Rain is expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during the period.
The Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore said low-level flooding was being reported in the Indus River at Tarbela Dam, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa and Guddu Barrage. The situation in the country’s other rivers was reported to be normal.
