WHILST the federal budget 2023-24 is packed with relief measures, especially for the fixed income groups, it is heartening to see that the welfare of journalists and artistes, the very important pillar of the society, has also been well taken care of. The budget envisages a health insurance scheme of one billion rupees each for both the journalists and the artistes. Indeed this is a praiseworthy step on the part of the government which is a testament to its commitment to social justice and inclusivity.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb really deserves appreciation for her efforts to incorporate the health insurance scheme for these professionals. In fact, she has always been at the forefront in persuasively raising voice both for the journalists and artistes who often face unique challenges and risks in their line of work including physical and mental strain, exposure to dangerous environments and financial instability. By extending health insurance coverage, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government has demonstrated its understanding of these challenges and its dedication to protecting their wellbeing. This step will not only enhance their quality of life but also affirm the value of their contribution to society. Unquestionably, the journalists and artistes are the backbone of any vibrant society, serving as catalysts for change, expression and cultural enrichment. Their tireless efforts and creative endeavours contribute significantly to the fabric of our nation. Whilst their welfare has been ignored in the past, the health insurance scheme will address one of their most pressing concerns about the lack of adequate healthcare benefits. Many journalists and artists cannot afford quality healthcare services. Hence this new initiative will bring a much needed relief by ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for them and their families. By alleviating the burden of medical expenses, the government has provided them with peace of mind and the opportunity to focus on their work without the worry of financial setbacks due to healthcare emergencies. This should be followed up with more such steps that bring improvement in their living standards.
