ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has taken strict notice after it emerged that the electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) has stopped accepting new applications for registration of net metering for solar users.
The reports about suspension of application procession left consumers in shock as the government is also planning measures to reduce buyback rates.
Nepra Notice
NEPRA has sent notices to all Distribution Companies (DISCOs), including K-Electric, after it came to light that new net metering requests are being blocked.
In the notice, NEPRA emphasized that halting the registration of new applications for net metering is a matter of serious concern and is in direct violation of established laws. The authority described this as an urgent issue, requesting that all DISCOs provide a detailed explanation within three working days.
DISCOs Response
While NEPRA’s concerns are mounting, some electricity companies have responded to these allegations.
They clarified that they are still receiving applications through online portal, PITC, as acceptance of physical applications have been suspended in order to ensure transparency in the system.
DISCOs said consumers, who are filing applications through online portal, are being issued registration and saving numbers instantly.
According to these companies, there has been no suspension in the receipt of new net metering applications.
The issue has raised questions about the effectiveness of the regulatory framework and whether consumers are being unfairly impacted.
NEPRA’s action highlights its commitment to ensuring that energy regulations are followed and that no company unduly limits consumer access to services like net metering.
