Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Minister of Interior Affairs provided the family of the man, who was publicly executed for retribution in Farah province of western Afghanistan, with cash assistance of 100,000 Afghanis.

A football stadium in the province of Farah, in western Afghanistan, was packed with spectators and high-ranking officials as the caretaker government of Afghanistan on Wednesday carried out the first confirmed public execution since assuming power last year.

Since Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the group, made the order last month, enforcing Sharia law has been the Islamic government’s top priority. Public executions, amputations, and stoning are among the penalty measures.

Taj Mir, who killed Mustafa many years ago, was the man who was shot in public, according to the Appellate Court’s ruling of retributive justice. The court’s decision backed the “an eye for an eye” principle, allowing Mustafa’s father to shoot Taj Mir in an attempt to restore justice by retribution.

The public had previously expected more lenient enforcement and interpretation of Sharia law from the interim administration, but this expectation is gradually shifting to one more consistent with the prior strict and harsh reign of the group.

Strong reactions followed the public execution of the penalty of retribution and flogging. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Amnesty International have demanded that capital punishment be abolished.—KP
