KARACHI – Motorcycle riders and those who own up to 1000cc cars in Karachi have received some good news as the Sindh government has agreed to reduce the heavy fines imposed on them.
This decision came after a meeting of the special committee on e-challans in the Sindh Assembly, chaired by Provincial Minister for Interior Ziaul Hassan Lanjhar.
The move follows a request from Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi, who raised concerns over the high fines on motorcycles, especially for vehicles up to 1000cc.
Reports claimed that the government has agreed to lower these fines as part of a broader effort to make traffic regulations more reasonable and fair.
During the meeting, Khurshidi emphasized that simply raising fines would not address Karachi’s traffic problems.
He stressed the need for not only lower fines but also improved traffic management, including functional traffic signals and clear lane markings.
He highlighted that many streets in Karachi lack proper lane markings and that traffic signals are often not working, making it difficult for motorists to follow the rules.
Khurshidi further pointed out that the burden of these excessive fines disproportionately affected the lower and middle-income groups.
He argued that without improvements to the city’s infrastructure, such fines would remain unfair and ineffective in solving traffic issues.
Sindh has recently implemented significant increases in traffic fines, introducing tougher penalties and a demerit point system for various offenses.
Fines have been raised for violations such as speeding (up to Rs. 15,000 for cars), running red lights (Rs. 2,000-5,000), and driving without a valid license (up to Rs. 50,000).
