Former Indian Air Force Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman, who became famous after being captured by Pakistan during the February 2019 India-Pakistan aerial confrontation, has entered a new phase of his career by joining India’s regional airline FLY91 as a commercial pilot.
The development comes more than seven years after Varthaman became a central figure in one of the most closely watched military confrontations between India and Pakistan in recent years.
Captured After India’s Claimed Balakot Strike
On February 26, India announced that its aircrafts had carried out strikes near Balakot in Pakistan, while Pakistan rejected India’s claims regarding the nature and outcome of the operation.
The following day, Pakistan conducted air operations across the Line of Control, triggering an aerial confrontation between Indian and Pakistani aircraft.
Varthaman, then a Wing Commander with the Indian Air Force’s 51 Squadron, was flying a MiG-21 Bison during the engagement. His aircraft was shot down and he ejected before being captured by Pakistani forces.
Images and footage of the captured Indian pilot quickly circulated internationally, making Varthaman one of the most recognizable figures associated with the 2019 confrontation.
Pakistan released Varthaman on March 1, 2019, and he returned to India after approximately two days in Pakistani custody. His release was widely portrayed in India as a diplomatic success, while Pakistan presented it as a gesture aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
