Train operations across Sindh were suspended on Sunday after 17 wagons of a freight train derailed near Wahab Shah Railway Station in Matiari district.
According to Pakistan Railways officials, the derailment forced the closure of both the up and down railway tracks, bringing rail traffic to a standstill.
Officials said restoration work could take as long as 24 hours before services fully resume.
The disruption left several passenger trains stranded at different stations. The Karakoram Express was stopped at Hyderabad, Allama Iqbal Express at Kotri, Pakistan Express at Landhi, Tezgam Express at Drigh Road, while Millat Express and Fareed Express were held at Karachi Cantonment station.
Railway authorities said the affected freight train, carrying coal from Karachi to Yousafwala, went off the tracks near Wahab Shah Railway Station, severely disrupting operations on the main rail corridor.
No casualties were reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
Rescue personnel and railway engineering teams were rushed to the site to begin restoration work, while additional trains were halted at stations including Tando Adam, Hyderabad, Karachi and Rohri as a precaution.
Sukkur Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, Farman Ghani, said relief trains had been dispatched from Rohri and Kotri to assist with recovery efforts.
He noted that a significant section of the railway track had been damaged, making repairs time-consuming. Crews are working to clear the derailed wagons and restore both tracks so train services can resume as soon as possible.
