Violence refuses to die down in the Indian state of Manipur, as four more villagers, including a father and a son, were killed by armed men in the mountainous area between ChodaChandpur and Bishnoor districts. Four residents of Akka Sui village of Bishnopur identified as Romen Singh (38), Dara Singh (37), Ibomcha Singh (51), and his son Anand Singh (20), had gone to the nearby forest to collect firewood to light a fire in severe cold, when unknown armed men kidnapped them and tortured them to death.
Masked gunmen have claimed responsibility for the killing of these people in a video uploaded on social media.
Over 200 people, majority of them Kiki Christians, have been killed and over 50,000 displaced in the ethnic violence between Metei (mainly Hindus) and Kuki-Zo (majority Christians) communities since May last year. The violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei Hindu community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The Indian National Congress has once again criticized the Modi government for the latest incident of murder of four people in Manipur. Congress wrote on the social networking site X that violence has been going on in Manipur for more than eight months and eight people were killed in the last eleven days but it doesn’t matter to the Indian Prime Minister Modi.—INP
