The recent events in Gilgit-Baltistan have once again highlighted the fragility of sectarian relations in this picturesque region. Tensions unfortunately have been simmering for over a week, with protests, inflammatory remarks, and even suspension of mobile and Internet services, all contributing to a sense of unrest. At the heart of issue lies sectarian strife, a longstanding problem that has periodically flared up. It is high time for both government and people to prioritise sectarian harmony and find ways to address this issue on permanent basis.

Sectarian conflicts in Gilgit-Baltistan have deep historical roots, often exacerbated by external influences and geopolitical tensions. The region is home to various sects, with Sunni and Shia communities being the two major denominations. Over the years, external factors, including funding and ideological influence from various foreign actors, have fuelled sectarian divisions. The recent bout of unrest was sparked by derogatory remarks made by prominent cleric Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmed, followed by insensitive comments by Agha Baqir Al-Hussaini. These incidents reflect not only volatility of sectarian relations but also power of words to incite violence and unrest. The situation warrants involvement of religious scholars from both Sunni and Shia backgrounds in order to avert the situation getting out of control. These religious leaders should actively condemn hate speech, regardless of its source and highlight true teachings of Islam that stands against any form of bigotry and discrimination, including sectarianism.

The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has a significant role to play in resolving sectarian tensions. We suggest establishment of a well functioning conflict resolution mechanism, perhaps through a local council composed of representatives from various sects. This council can mediate disputes and work towards peaceful solutions. The government must also ensure that the law is applied impartially and swiftly against individuals who incite violence or engage in hate speech, regardless of their religious or sectarian affiliations. This should be done in accordance with the principles of justice and due process. It is also important to use education as a tool for promoting tolerance and unity. The curriculum should include lessons on religious diversity and importance of coexistence. At this juncture, greater responsibility rests with media to focus on promoting harmony rather than sensationalising sectarian tensions. Our enemy will try to inflame the current situation but through concerted and coordinated efforts, we need to calm things down.
