DHAKA – The ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan was attacked and set on fire by a group of angry individuals, the local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The attackers reportedly smashed windows and threw petrol bombs at the house, triggering a fire on the upper floor of the property.
The police said the incident occurred in Magura district while the house was unoccupied at the time. No casualties were reported.
The attack came shortly after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed a public media programme for the first time since being removed from power in 2024. Shakib Al Hasan also participated in the programme virtually.
During the address, Hasina said she intended to return to Bangladesh in December, regardless of whether she faced imprisonment or threats to her life.
Shakib, who was elected to parliament in 2024 on an Awami League ticket, has remained outside Bangladesh since the change of government.
The former captain is facing investigations in several cases in Bangladesh, including allegations related to murder, corruption, fraud and money laundering.
The incident involving Shakib’s family home comes amid continuing political tensions in Bangladesh following the change of government.
The local authorities have begun investigating the attack and are working to identify those responsible for damaging the property and setting it on fire.
The police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the incident.
Shakib remains one of Bangladesh’s most prominent cricketers, having represented the country across all three international formats and previously served as captain of the national team.
