Snow is both a blessing and challenge for Afghans. It is especially a challenge if one is poor.

Some low-income people said that snow causes them lots of challenges but, on the other hand, some people welcome snow and are busy with winter play.

Mahjabin is the mother of six children and peddles goods on the roadsides of Kabul and says that snow has a harmful impact on her work.

“When it is not snow and rainy days, we can find 100 or 150 Afghani but when it’s a snowy day, nobody comes to buy because it’s so cold,” said Mahjabin, a low-income woman. As international organizations have reported, this winter people are faced with economic challenges and did not have enough preparation for the winter.

“On a snowy day we can’t work, but when it’s a sunny day work goes well,” said Mohammad Mer, a low-income man.

Meanwhile, some people welcomed these snowy days.

“We play in the snow and enjoy the snow and we are happy,” said Hamid Shahab, a Kabul resident.

“People are happy after a hard summer, they see the snow and enjoy snowy days,” said Nazar Mohammad, a photographer.

Meanwhile, members of the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock consider snowfall and rain beneficial in helping agricultural products and believe that snowfall will save us from drought.

“Snow is like an investment for our farmers because they need water for their agriculture, and they can continue their work,’ said Merwais Haji Zada.

“With snow, we can access more water for our gardens and fields, and our country’s agriculture can progress,” said Akhter Mohammad, head of the fruit union.

As international organizations have reported, this winter people are faced with economic challenges and did not have enough preparation for the winter.

In the recent snowfall, some highways all over the country were closed to traffic. —Ariana news
