ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF)/flash floods alert for Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan, amid heavy rains prediction in the region.
“A weather system is expected to bring isolated heavy rainfall to Chitral from the evening/night of August 03. In Gilgit-Baltistan, intermittent rain is expected from August 03 to August 06. These conditions, combined with the melting of high-elevation glacial lakes, may increase the likelihood of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and flash floods in the region”, reads the alert issued by the PMD on Friday.
District Administrations and local organizations have been advised to stay alert and be prepared for the GLOF and flash flood events. They have also been advised to communicate timely warnings to communities to avoid high-risk areas and to follow safety instructions.
