Khamenei’s coffin was carried through packed streets before reaching the Imam Reza Shrine, where he was laid to rest. The shrine, dedicated to Imam Reza, the eighth Imam in Shia Islam, is one of the religion’s most sacred pilgrimage sites and attracts millions of visitors each year.
Thousands of mourners dressed in black lined the streets of Mashhad, waving Iranian flags, carrying portraits of Khamenei, and chanting revolutionary slogans as his coffin made its final journey to Iran’s holiest Shia shrine. The golden dome and towering minarets of the Imam Reza Shrine formed the backdrop to one of the country’s largest state funerals in recent history.
The burial followed a week of ceremonies that took Khamenei’s remains through Tehran, Qom, and the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. The coffins of four family members who were also killed in the same attack accompanied him throughout the processions.
Iranian authorities described the large public turnout as a demonstration of national unity and resilience despite months of conflict with Israel and the United States. However, the funeral also unfolded at a time of growing political uncertainty, with Iran facing economic pressures, security concerns, and questions surrounding its new leadership.
Khamenei’s son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, remained absent from all public funeral ceremonies. Reports claim he suffered serious injuries during the strike that killed his father, although Iranian officials have not commented publicly on his condition. His continued absence has fueled speculation over his health as he assumes leadership during one of Iran’s most challenging periods.
Anger toward the United States was evident throughout the funeral procession. Many mourners chanted slogans demanding revenge against US President Donald Trump, while some carried placards calling for his death. Protesters blamed both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the military operation that resulted in Khamenei’s death.
Khamenei was assassinated in February this year when Israeli strike targeted his residence in Tehran during the opening phase of the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Several members of his family also died in the attack
