LAHORE – At several Airports, dozens of Pakistanis stood in line with passports, visas, and job contracts in hand, only to be stopped by the Federal Investigation Agency. “You cannot board,” federal investigators told passengers, citing new stern affidavit requirement.
The development comes as FIA tightened travel restrictions, leaving hundreds of Pakistanis stranded at airports despite holding valid work visas, employment contracts, and passports. Over 150 workers were reportedly offloaded from Lahore Airport alone last week, with destinations ranging from UAE to other GCC.
The new rules require travelers to produce a sworn affidavit, certified by senior government officials, pledging not to attempt unauthorized travel to any third country. Officials claim the measure is aimed at cracking down on human smuggling and protecting Pakistan’s international image.
But for affected workers, the rules have become a nightmare. Some called it confusing, unfair, and financially crippling, with no clear guidance on how to obtain the affidavit. Travelers report being stopped at the gate and turned away, causing panic and anger.
Inspectors from Protectorate Department are now stationed at airports in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Peshawar, checking documents on the spot. While authorities say they are helping travelers with complete paperwork, FIA officers continue to refuse boarding in numerous cases.
Overseas Employment Promoters Association has slammed the FIA, warning that these harsh measures could destroy the confidence of legal Pakistani workers traveling abroad and damage the country’s economy and reputation. They are urging the government to implement a digital verification system to prevent further chaos.
With thousands potentially affected, the sudden crackdown has sparked outrage and fear among Pakistanis planning to work overseas. Travelers and experts alike are questioning whether the government’s approach is fair, or unnecessarily punitive.
