Many residents of Herat province are spending nights in open areas and parks in fear of possible earthquakes as a previous devastating earthquake shocked the province.

Gul Mohammad and his seven-member family are settled in Taraqi park of Herat city. He has a vegetable and fruit shop in Herat.

“As our houses are made from mud, when I heard about the earthquake, I quickly went and brought my children out to the open area,” he said.

“The earthquake has shocked all of us. We came out here for the past three nights,” said Nazneen, a resident of Herat.

The residents called on the interim government and aid organizations to provide them with assistance.

Yaar Mohammad, a resident of Herat, said the residents experienced many earthquakes in the past days.

“We are living in this park. The people are in chaos. The weather in Herat has become cold while many people are out here in the parks alongside their children,” said Aasia, a resident of Herat.

Around 2,500 people have been killed and over 2,000 others have been wounded in the earthquake that targeted Herat and its neighboring provinces on Saturday.

Hundreds of houses were destroyed because of the earthquake.
