LAHORE – Punjab is again facing smog crisis, raising fears of potential school closures and early winter vacations just like last year. As Met Office issued warning about rapidly worsening smog across the province, with Lahore experiencing particularly hazardous conditions.
Persistent dry weather is driving pollution levels higher, and experts predict the situation will deteriorate further in the coming days. Lahore has been named the world’s most polluted city, with a dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI). posing serious health risks.
Provincial capital Lahore remains worst affected region as per AQI, with deteriorating air quality causing major difficulties for residents, particularly school-going children, who are among the most vulnerable to respiratory issues and other health problems.
As is often the case, the worsening smog sparked speculation about early winter holidays for schools. However, officials clarified that no decision has been made regarding school closures or early vacations this year.
Early Winter Vacations Smog
Despite these clarifications, several digital portals circulated misleading reports and fake news, falsely claiming that winter vacations have already been announced. Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official statements from the Punjab government and the Education Department.
Doctors also highlighted polluted air could lead to a spike in respiratory illnesses, cough, flu, and eye irritation across the province. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will announce any preventive measures if needed.
In 2024, Punjab government shut down schools for a week starting November 3, later extending the holidays by another week due to severe smog. This year, authorities are closely monitoring the crisis, but no official decision on school closures has yet been made. However, sources suggest that primary schools could be closed as a precaution if pollution continues to rise.
Health experts warn that the toxic air could trigger a surge in respiratory illnesses, flu, cough, and eye irritation, with children, the elderly, and patients being the most vulnerable. Eastern Punjab is also expected to see worsening air quality in the coming days.
With Lahore at the top of the world pollution charts once again, families, schools, and authorities are on high alert — and the coming days could see urgent measures to protect public health.
