As India prepares to celebrate its 75th Republic Day, tomororw, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the ‘World Forum for Peace Justice,’ challenges the legality of New Delhi commemorating its Republic Day in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, citing historical UN Security Council resolutions on the matter.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Fai in a statement issued in Washington emphasized that while India had the right to celebrate its Constitution within its legal boundaries, the celebration in occupied Kashmir lacks democratic and legal legitimacy. Referring to UN resolutions from 1948, Fai underscores the intended plebiscite for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their political future. He questions the moral, legal, and constitutional authority of India to celebrate in a region not recognized as an integral part of its territory.
Highlighting the human rights violations in Kashmir, including over 100,000 killings, torture, rape, and draconian measures against dissent, Fai accuses India of committing war crimes. He points out the lack of accountability for these actions, contrasting them with international responses to similar offenses in other parts of the world.
Fai advocates for a resolution to the Kashmir conflict through the implementation of the right to self-determination promised to the people over seven decades ago. He contends that resolving the Kashmir issue could alleviate tensions between India and Pakistan, fostering economic growth and stability in the region.
