Harvey Elliot scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) at Moulinex in their FA Cup replay.

Despite a string of poor performances, Jurgen Klopp decided to rotate his side for the tie making eight changes to the side that was pummeled by Brighton and it paid dividends in the 13th minute when Elliot’s long-range strike nestled into the back of the net for the game’s only goal.

The match continued to lack the drama of the last meeting between the two sides at Anfield which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Fabio Carvalho seemingly doubled the visitors’ lead as half-time approached but the goal was ruled out for offside as the visitors took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The second stanza proved to be a dull affair as well with Wolves chasing an equaliser that never came.

Julen Lopetegui exhausted all his attacking options as the best chance of the second half fell to Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha whose free header in the area failed to trouble Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool’s first win in four matches in all competitions now sets up a fourth-round FA Cup tie with the same Brighton team that outclassed them on Saturday.

Wolves, meanwhile, leave empty-handed and feeling undone by a dubious call in the last FA Cup game against Liverpool which forced them to replay the tie. They turn their attention to the Premier League where they are currently fighting to stay alive in the top flight of English competition.
