IN recent years, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted the criticality of near-term mitigation and adaptation actions in combating climate change and its associated risks. As global warming intensifies, the projected adverse impacts and related losses escalate incrementally, underscoring the urgency for action.

In the face of growing environmental challenges, SEED Ventures, a dedicated group of developers and investors focused on social impact, has taken a bold step forward. Introducing ‘What’s the Alternative’ (WTA), a revolutionary sustainability platform that aims to provide solutions and address these pressing issues. This pioneering platform aims to initiate a global conversation on sustainable living, providing practical solutions and choices that shape a more environmentally conscious future for all.

To gain insights into the plans of ‘What’s the Alternative’, we had the privilege of conversing with one of its visionary creators, Shaista Ayesha, a Social Impact Specialist and the CEO of SEED Ventures. During our discussion, we explored the motivations, goals, and anticipated impact that the platform hopes to achieve. When asked about the core message of WTA, Shaista stated, “At the heart of WTA lies a fundamental message: to inspire and empower individuals and communities to embrace sustainable choices and propel transformative change. We deliberately chose this message because we firmly believe that every individual possesses the power to contribute significantly to a sustainable future.”

Amidst the escalating climate crisis, there are concerted efforts by individuals, corporations, and communities to educate people on building a better future and mitigating the crisis. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that certain crucial aspects are often overlooked or not adequately addressed. Shaista points out, “While observing sustainability conversations, we noticed a common oversight: the tendency to primarily focus on environmental aspects while neglecting the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainability. Determined to bridge this gap, we made it our mission to integrate these dimensions into our platform.”

Establishing a structured framework for these discussions enables all stakeholders to develop comprehensive plans, leading to more effective strategies for change. However, the real challenge lies in engaging stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and with different motivations, as Shaista aptly points out, “Through a range of educational resources, articles, and opinion pieces, we strive to both inform and inspire individuals. Our platform serves as a catalyst for community engagement, offering forums, discussions, and networking opportunities where people can connect and exchange ideas.” Since WTA is divided into different parts, we couldn’t help but be curious about how these themes tie into sustainability. Hence, Shaista Ayesha sheds light on the significance of the platform’s three pillars, stating, “At the core of our platform are three central themes: environment, wellness, and lifestyle. We deliberately selected these themes as they encompass crucial areas where both individual and collective actions can make a substantial positive impact on the environment and society. Within these themes, we prioritize highlighting topics such as sustainable consumption, biodiversity conservation, and climate action. Our intention is to ignite inspiration and empowerment, motivating individuals to make sustainable choices and actively contribute to meaningful change in their daily lives and communities,” she continues, “The well-being of individuals and communities is inherently tied to the health of the environment. By advocating for sustainable practices, including pollution reduction and the adoption of eco-friendly lifestyles, we can actively enhance public health outcomes.”

Understanding that sustainability is the need of the hour, the platform is now embracing a path toward a greener and more sustainable future. ‘What’s the Alternative’ (WTA) has partnered with the Overseas Investors Chambers of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) to present its inaugural event: the EcoSummit, scheduled for July 12, 2023. This highly anticipated inaugural event will take place at the Chambers of Commerce Building in Karachi. The EcoSummit aims to bring together industry leaders from diverse sectors, uniting their expertise to engage in dynamic discussions on alternative solutions for reducing environmental harm and exploring innovative ways to promote sustainability. It serves as an exceptional opportunity for visionaries, innovators, and change-makers to convene, collaborate, and pave the way for a brighter and more eco-conscious future.
