Acting Punjab Governor Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Tuesday said that he, during 40 years long political career, has seen many governments coming into powers and going home.
“I was told that you do not beat drums like Shehbaz Sharif about your performance but I used to say that my work would speak. I don’t know if Shehbaz Sharif laid any bricks in the journalist colony after out government departed.”

The acting governor expressed these views while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected office-bearers of Punjab Assembly Press Gallery held at Governor House on Tuesday. The ceremony was also attended and addressed by President Lahore Press Club, Arshad Ansari and Ayaz Shujah, President Press Gallery. A good number of journalists from print and electronic media were also present on the occasion.

The acting governor said that opposition has reconsidered some issues like the decision to run in the Senate election is a good omen. He said that Parliament is the only venue where problems are solved. The path of political dialogue and negotiation will also come from the parliament.

Local elections are coming after the Senate elections all political parties should take part in this too since boycott is not the solution.

He recalled that in 1985, the PPP boycotted elections, which ultimately left the party far behind. “Something can be achieved by staying in the system, who would have thought that Trump would lose. A lot can be achieved by staying in the system.”

Pervaiz Elahi said that the opposition should also take part in the local elections. Due to Corona other matters were delayed and difficulties were faced here, while the oath taking ceremony of the Punjab Assembly Press Gallery was also delayed. Ch Pervaiz Elahi was of the view that Parliamentary reporting plays an important role in resolving issues of elected representatives and the people. Parliamentary reporters cover legislation and debate from the platform of the Punjab Assembly, he added. Through parliamentary reporting people come to know what their representatives are doing?

Parliamentary reporters and members of parliament are part and parcel of each other. We raised effective voice on the Assembly floor from the platform of Punjab Assembly to highlight public issues for full protection. The position has decided to run in the Senate elections after reviewing several issues. It is hoped that after the Senate, the political forces will prepare for the local body elections. He said that the government has gone to court over Senate election process.

Whatever the decision of the court is, everyone will accept it. The Supreme Court has to decide according to the constitution and not on aspirations, We are with the decision of the Supreme Court, he added.

The PML-Q stalwart declared that the PDM will benefit even more if it stays in the system.
“I had contested the elections in 1985 but the PPP had boycotted them and the boycott was a great loss to the PPP”. Mr. Elahi maintained.

He believed that it is not necessary to always win, never to be out of the system. I will also talk to the Chief Minister regarding journalists colony Phase II. The new assembly building will be completed this month and Imran Khan will inaugurate the new assembly in March. Opposition and government will get facilities in the new building of Punjab Assembly.

Opposition and government should form governments together. If we do not go beyond the realm of our ego, there is a loss, he added. The more you bow down in politics, the more you will succeed. Public and political issues are solved if one works in good faith, Mr. Elahi concluded.
