Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash in Dallas.
The victory marked Egypt’s first knockout-stage win at a FIFA World Cup finals and extended the unbeaten run of Hossam Hassan’s side.
Australia threatened early when Cristian Volpato struck the crossbar from long range, but Egypt opened the scoring in the 13th minute.
Emam Ashour reacted quickest after his initial effort was blocked, heading home from Karim Hafez’s cross to give the Pharaohs the advantage. It was Ashour’s second goal of the tournament after arriving in North America without a previous international goal.
The Socceroos pushed for a response but suffered a setback when full-back Jordan Bos was forced off at half-time with a knee injury. Egypt missed a chance to double their lead early in the second half as Omar Marmoush shot wide after breaking clear.
Australia equalised from a set piece when Aiden O’Neill delivered a free-kick into the area, with Mohamed Hany inadvertently heading the ball into his own net.
Egypt came close to sealing victory in normal time, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced an outstanding one-handed save to deny Rami Rabia’s powerful header from a Mohamed Salah cross. Salah also created another opportunity for Haissem Hassan, whose effort was blocked by Harry Souttar.
Australia introduced substitute goalkeeper Mat Ryan before the end of extra time, but the match was decided from the penalty spot. Egypt converted all four of their penalties, including a composed Panenka by Salah, while misses from Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington proved costly.
Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty to send Egypt into a Round of 16 meeting in Atlanta on 7 July against the winner of the Argentina versus Cabo Verde match.
