AS the country braces itself for the general election, the focus on a peaceful and secure electoral environment is paramount. In a meeting on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja underscored the crucial need for ensuring a tranquil electoral environment. The meeting, attended by chief secretaries, police chiefs, representatives of law enforcement agencies and the commission’s secretary, highlighted the significance of timely administrative and security arrangements.

The cornerstone of a thriving democracy lies in the people’s ability to exercise their right to vote freely and without fear. A peaceful environment during elections is essential to fostering a sense of security among political parties, candidates and voters alike. It is a matter of great satisfaction that the ECP, recognizing this fundamental principle, is taking necessary steps to creating conditions that enable the people to participate in the democratic process without intimidation or threat. The upcoming general election is taking place at a critical juncture in our history, with the nation  confronting both internal and external challenges. It is imperative that the polling day passes without disruption to pave the way for political stability. The democratic exercise becomes a beacon of hope, allowing the country to chart its course amid challenges, and the results will reflect the collective will of the people. Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja has emphasized that no effort will be spared to ensure foolproof security, particularly at sensitive polling stations. This commitment extends to securing the safety of political leaders, voters, and rallies. Ensuring a successful election day is not the sole responsibility of the authorities; it also involves various stakeholders, with the media playing a pivotal role. It is crucial for media outlets to create awareness among the public regarding the significance of their votes. A well-informed electorate is more likely to participate actively in the democratic process, leading to a higher voter turnout. In the lead-up to the elections, there has been a concerning surge in propaganda campaigns orchestrated by certain elements. The responsibility to reject and counter such campaigns rests on the shoulders of the media and the public. The dissemination of accurate information and the rejection of misinformation are essential to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
