ISLAMABAD – Authorities have announced a new requirement for all vehicles entering the capital city of Islamabad to have an electronic tag (E-tag) within two weeks.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that vehicles without the E-tag, including those belonging to local residents, will be barred from entry after the deadline.
The E-tag, a clearance sticker issued by relevant authorities, will only be provided once a vehicle passes a carbon emission test. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle smog and improve air quality in the city.
Last month, i the Islamabad administration has made carbon emission (emission) testing mandatory for all vehicles.
The decision, which aims to control the harmful smoke released by vehicles and improve air quality in the federal capital, requires all vehicles to undergo the test at only certified laboratories.
The decision was announced following a meeting chaired by Chairman CDA (Capital Development Authority) and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting focused on various measures to curb air pollution in the city.
In addition to the emission testing mandate, the meeting also called for the conversion of brick kilns and industries to more environmentally friendly technologies.
A complete ban on garbage burning was imposed, with strict legal action planned for violators.
Chairman Randhawa directed all relevant departments to formulate a comprehensive strategy to tackle smog, ensuring full adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in place.
During the meeting, it was revealed that several brick kilns have already been demolished for violating environmental laws, and steps are underway to move the remaining kilns to modern, eco-friendly systems.
An expert suggested promoting the cultivation of trees that effectively absorb pollution from the air. He also recommended public awareness campaigns and the promotion of carpooling as part of efforts to reduce vehicle emissions.
