en’s welfare and empowerment, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz have announced a series of initiatives. These announcements, made on the occasion of International Women’s Day, mark significant steps towards addressing obstacles and impediments that hinder women’s progress in society.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of establishing a monitoring cell at the PM House specifically for the protection of women and to combat violence against them is a testament to his commitment to the wellbeing of women. This initiative reflects a zero-tolerance approach towards violence against women, acknowledging the urgent need to safeguard their rights and ensure their safety in all spheres of life. The establishment of such a cell signifies a proactive measure to address issues of gender-based violence and discrimination, underscoring the government’s dedication to fostering a safer environment for women. On the other hand, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s announcements especially that of increase in the job quota for women in the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) and the directive to expedite the induction of women into vacant positions signify a concerted effort to enhance women’s participation in the workforce. Additionally, the allocation of funds for the establishment of Day Care Centres and hostels for working women reflects recognition of the challenges faced by women balancing work and family responsibilities. Furthermore, initiatives such as paid internships, financial support for online businesses, and facilitating property inheritance rights for daughters highlight a holistic approach towards empowering women economically. These measures will not only enhance women’s economic independence but also contribute to their overall empowerment and autonomy. While these announcements mark significant progress towards women’s empowerment, there remains a pressing need to prioritize education, particularly for girls in marginalized and rural areas. Education not only equips women with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue their aspirations but also empowers them to challenge social norms and stereotypes. Therefore, efforts must be directed towards not only increasing access to formal education but also emphasizing skill development and vocational training tailored to women’s needs.
