DPM Dar arrives in New York for key UNSC debate

NEW YORK – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in New York on Tuesday to participate in a high-level debate of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Foreign Office said.

The Foreign Office said that the debate is being held under China’s presidency of the UNSC amid Middle East conflict.

During his visit, DPM Dar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts and senior United Nations officials.

Upon his arrival in New York, Dar was received by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad and Consul General of Pakistan in New York Aamer Ahmad Atozai.

The Foreign Office said Dar’s visit, scheduled from May 26 to 28, also includes participation in a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance.

Chinese officials said the UNSC debate, titled “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System,” aims to reaffirm the importance of the UN Charter, strengthen the authority of the Security Council and promote multilateral diplomacy amid growing global instability.

Beijing has expressed concern over increasing geopolitical tensions, warning that they are placing significant pressure on multilateral institutions and the international system.

Pakistan is expected to support China’s stance on strengthening the role of the United Nations and encouraging dialogue-based solutions to international conflicts. Diplomatic sources said Dar is likely to reiterate Pakistan’s longstanding position that disputes should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was also invited to attend the debate by China, will not participate after reportedly being denied a visa by the host country.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei as saying during a press briefing that Araghchi would not travel to New York due to visa-related issues.
