A wave of jubilation swept through Islamabad’s trading community and residents on Monday after the district administration granted much-awaited relief by easing restrictions on market operating hours ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, ending days of uncertainty and protests by business leaders.
According to a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, selected essential businesses and daily-use commercial activities have been exempted from the previously notified market closure timings till May 31, 2026, allowing traders in the federal capital to continue business operations with greater flexibility during the peak festive shopping season.
The decision comes after persistent demands from traders’ associations, shopping mall representatives and the general public, who had been urging authorities to align Islamabad’s market timings with neighboring Rawalpindi, where the Punjab government had already allowed markets to remain operational till midnight until June 1.
The latest development triggered celebrations across major commercial centers including Super Market, Jinnah Super Market, Aabpara Market and other business hubs, where traders welcomed the district administration’s move, calling it a timely and business-friendly decision ahead of Eid.
Business leaders said the relaxation would not only help shopkeepers recover from recent losses caused by restricted business hours but would also provide residents and shoppers with ample time for Eid-related purchases.
Former President of Traders Welfare Association Super Market, Sarfraz Mughal, termed the decision a victory for the business community and public alike.
“For days, traders had been requesting the administration to review the early closure policy, especially when Rawalpindi markets were enjoying extended hours. This decision has brought a sense of relief and renewed business confidence,” he said.
Despite the relaxation, the district administration clarified that Marriage Halls, Marquees and other festive event venues will continue to remain bound to close operations by 10:00 PM.
The notification further urged citizens, traders and business owners to cooperate fully with the district administration and ensure strict compliance with the notified instructions.
Residents also expressed satisfaction over the decision, saying extended market operations would ease shopping pressure and facilitate families preparing for Eid festivities.
