The 10th meeting of the Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordination Committee Karachi was held in the committee room of TDAP Head Office Karachi.
The meeting was presided over by Ms. Shazia Adnan, Director General, IPO-Pakistan. Mr. Meesaq Arif, Executive Director, IPO was also attended the meeting and moderated the proceedings in this regard.
Mr. Nasir Mahmood Zahid Director IPO delivered a presentation on legal frame for IPR enforcement and institutional developments in this regard.
The Committee was apprised about the latest progress in the field of IPR enforcement and its impact on the national economy. The Director General highlighted the important role of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) in the enforcement of IPRs.
The Executive Director presented the agenda of the meeting and get feedback of the members on implementation issues after recent decision of Lahore High Court.
Pakistan’s global IP ranking is continuously improving since last 5 years due to sharing of data received from LEAs regarding enforcement actions against piracy and counterfeiting.
The LEAs shared their experience in the implementation of IP laws and explained about the problems faced by them. Syed Nasrullah Registrar of Copyrights, Muhammad Rafiq Registrar of Trademarks and Mr. Saifullah Khan Deputy Director IPO Head Office also attended meeting and responded queries on different issues.
Addressing the meeting, Ms, Shazia Adnan said enforcement of IP rights through designated law enforcement agencies, i.e. Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Customs etc. is one of the key functions of IPO-Pakistan. She also reiterated that IPO would use all resources for awareness of the agencies.
The Committee termed counterfeiting and piracy a crime against innovation and creativity and expressed the resolve that the issue would be dealt relentlessly and all out efforts would be made for the development of genuine businesses in the country.
The representatives of Pakistan Customs, Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Pakistan Electronic Media Authority, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, Sindh Food Authority,Chairman PIPRA and Representative of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry attended the meeting.
