On October 28, the Czech Republic celebrated its National Day at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, commemorating the declaration of independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. This significant milestone led to the establishment of Czechoslovakia, representing the Czech Republic’s enduring pursuit of sovereignty, resilience, and national pride.
The event was presided over by H.E. Mr. Ladislav Steinhubel, the Czech Ambassador to Pakistan. In his remarks, Ambassador Steinhubel emphasized not only the beauty of the Czech Republic, known for its stunning architecture and picturesque landscapes, but also the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and the Czech Republic. His speech set a warm and celebratory tone for the evening, underscoring the importance of this occasion in fortifying diplomatic relations.
The guest of honor was Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Khalid MaqboolSiddiqui, who extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan. He expressed appreciation for the long-standing diplomatic relationship with the Czech Republic, stating, “Pakistan values its relationship with the Czech Republic both bilaterally and within the European Union framework and looks forward to strengthening ties in all sectors.”
Among the distinguished guests were the EU Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. RiinaKionka; the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. AtadjanMovlamov; and the Czech Republic’s Consul Generals. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit among nations in the region.
In his address, Dr. Siddiqui highlighted key collaborations between the two nations, particularly in the energy sector. He noted the Czech contributions to Pakistan’s power infrastructure, including the installation of turbines at the Mangla Dam and the establishment of Independent Power Plants (IPPs) in Balloki (Orient Power) and Muridke (Sapphire Electric) by Czech firms. His remarks underscored the mutual benefits of these partnerships, emphasizing shared perspectives on various international and regional issues.
Dr. Siddiqui also acknowledged the robust parliamentary cooperation between Pakistan and the Czech Republic, mentioning the established Friendship Groups in both parliaments. He noted the steadily increasing trade relations, stating, “We are working towards enhancing bilateral trade and are delighted to have signed an economic cooperation agreement in 2023.” He highlighted the Czech Republic’s expertise in coal and mining, heavy machinery, and precision engineering, presenting significant opportunities for expanding trade and investment ties.
A special highlight of the evening was the culinary offerings prepared by a renowned chef from the Czech Republic, showcasing traditional dishes that delighted the attendees and introduced them to the rich flavors of Czech cuisine. This gastronomic experience further exemplified the cultural exchange between the two nations.
Additionally, Dr. Siddiqui recognized the contributions of the Pakistani community residing in the Czech Republic.
