Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi conducted a visit to Sabzi Mandi, Karachi’s central fruit and vegetable market, where he led a meeting to review the current system for setting prices.
The meeting, held at the office of the Market Committee, focused on enhancing transparency in the auction process. Deputy Commissioner East, Shehzad Fazal Abbasi, briefed Commissioner Naqvi on the workings of the Market Committee, explaining the procedures for price determination and the importance of auctions in setting fair market rates.
Chairman of the Market Committee, Ali Zeman, highlighted the challenges in the committee’s management and the issues affecting the auction process. Commissioner Naqvi stressed the need for improving the auction system, urging strict adherence to auction rules to ensure transparency. “The auction process must be transparent and fully compliant with the rules,” he stated, emphasizing that reforms are essential for fair pricing. Additional Deputy Commissioner Central, Sara Khan, who has been tasked with monitoring the auction and pricing systems at Sabzi Mandi, gave a detailed report.
She pointed out that many traders leave their trucks parked outside the market, waiting for the auction to conclude, which disrupts the process. In response, the meeting resolved that traders must participate in auctions at their designated times.
Legal actions will be taken against those who fail to comply. Commissioner Naqvi urged all stakeholders to work together closely to implement these reforms. The Assistant Commissioner of Gulzar-e-Hijri has been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the auction process.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Deputy Commissioner East Shehzad Fazal Abbasi, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sara Khan, Assistant Commissioners Rabia Syed and Ali Anwer Panwer, and Chairman of the Market Committee Ali Zeman. Members of the Bureau of Supply and other officials were also present.
