IT is really heartening to note that Sindh government, headed by Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah is taking the issue of street crimes very seriously.
This is reflective from the decisions taken at the provincial cabinet meeting on Monday in which it was decided to work out a strategy to eradicate street crime in the city via E-tagging of criminals involved in repeated incidents before starting targeted operations against them.
Electronic tagging is a system in which a criminal or suspected criminal has an electronic device attached to them.
This enables the police to know if they leave a particular area. The very step will greatly help keep a close eye on the criminals.
Peace was established in Karachi as a result of a strict operation by Rangers against the criminal elements and this could not be allowed to fade.
Whilst using the technology is the way forward, the CM must also pay special attention to the long delayed Karachi Safe City project, which envisaged installation of ten thousand CCTV cameras besides replacing traditional vehicle number plates by camera readable radio frequency identification number plates to facilitate data collection, amongst other purposes.
The completion of this project will go a long way in tracking down the criminals and provide a sense of security to Karachiites.
During the cabinet meeting, the provincial Chief Minister also directed the police officials to ensure patrolling in sensitive places in order to curb the recent surge in street crimes.
Karachi police is notorious for its lacklustre approach. There are also cases where the police personnel themselves were found hand in glove with the criminals.
Time has also come to purge the department of these black sheep completely.
Depoliticizing Karachi police is need of the hour to ensure effective policing and crime prevention.
Recruitments in police department must be made purely on a merit basis besides the new recruits be given state of the art training as well as reasonable remuneration package so that they could fulfil their responsibilities without any other consideration in mind.
