LAHORE – The Punjab government is planning major changes to the vehicle registration process, with a proposal to ensure that cars and motorcycles are registered before leaving dealerships.
According to Excise Department officials, all vehicle dealers across the province will be brought under the Dealer Vehicle Registration System (DVRS) to make the registration process more convenient and efficient for buyers.
Officials said a proposal has also been prepared to revise service charges. Under the proposed changes, motorcycle registration service charges would increase from Rs500 to Rs1,000, while charges for cars would rise from Rs2,000 to Rs4,000.
The Excise Department has provided lists of dealers to Motor Registration Authorities across Punjab and instructed officials to contact them and encourage their participation in the new system.
Officials added that a summary has been sent to the provincial government seeking easier licensing procedures and reduced fees for DVRS registration.
At present, only 102 licensed DVRS operators are working across Punjab, including 96 dealers authorised for motorcycle registrations and six dealers permitted to register cars.
Meanwhile, the Car Dealers Association has raised concerns over the proposal to issue licences to every showroom, questioning aspects of the planned registration model.
The association has sought clarification over the implementation and possible impact of the new system.
